Learning from David Hurley

David Hurley (no website unfortunately) makes the most beautiful, finely carved miniature Tudor furniture.   About a week and an half ago (how time flies!) he taught a three day class close to where I live.  I was one of the lucky people able to attend his class. We made a small chest with three carved panels.

It was a fantastic class, I have learned so much in those three days!   I am really pleased with my results even though there is still a vast amount of room for improvement.  Below are some photos of the finished chest.

  19. Looks great, just like your classmate's. It's clear it was a great workshop, and you've both moved forward big time! Of course there's always room for improvement Josje. I guess that's something that will always be. Just promise to enjoy this beautiful chest, it's a lovely result.

By the way, was it facilitated by Trees? Lucky to have her close by.

  20. Thank you all! Yes I know I am lucky I am able to follow such a great class close to my home. The class was held at Trees Beertema's house. She has a fantastic classroom and wonderful fascilities for dining as well as beautiful B&B accomodation for those who live further away. Trees hosts classes by really good miniaturists several times a year. I try to go to one or two each year. Living close by makes it a lot easier for me to take these classes.

Catherine, no I did not make the hardware, David had these all ready for us. However, as we all finished our chests well ahead of time, David gave us a very clear tutorial of how to make the hinges the way he does it. Great tips and tricks, we learned so much! It will be fairly easy to make them myself now. The only thing I need to find now is the stuff to blacken the nails. Because of my zealous polishing they reverted back to their shiny original look, whereas David had made them nice and black for us.

Australië is zover weg.

  26. Josje if you had told me what the metal was I would have been able to tell you what would oxidize them for you.

Try to find JAX... Maybe you can find a source in your country.

  32. My God! is fantastic! you did really, you? an extraordinary job, I love the carved chests!
    also the boots are beautiful!
Oh, Josje, I am ashamed to come here to rejoice in the wonder of what I see, and despair for what I do not know to create ...
depresses me to know that I am the last grain of sand in this world mini ... :(

Catherine, thank you for the link to Jax. I have emailed them a question, but haven't heard back from them. Unfortunately I can't find a source for the stuff in Europe.

Caterina, oh please don't despair! Everyone works and learns at his/her own pace and makes his/her own unique things. And after all, it is all about enjoying what you do! I often marvel at what other people make, and still love my own dolls house, even with all of its faults!

Trees woont in Ursem, net voorbij Hoorn.
