Kensington's garden

I have been working in the garden a lot recently, giving me little time for anything else.  Well strictly speaking that's not true, as I have been to London for five days this past week!

As you can see the garden is coming along nicely.  I have planted a hedge and filled the raised bed with soil.  I already have some lovely vegetables growing in there.  The cabbages and lettuces are by Angie Scarr,  the seedlings are made by....me!  Yes, another fantastic Fimo creation by my own fair hands ;-)))

' Hello hello, who's that?',  I hear you ask.  Well this sweet little kitty was my first purchase at the Kensington Dollshouse Festival this past weekend, at precisely 1 minute after 10 ;-)  Can you blame me?  He's just so sweet!  He was made by Annie Willis of Fine Design.

I think he is my favourite purchase from the show.  Perfect for my little city garden.

But hang on, what is he looking at?

It's just the vegetables, not a bird in sight.

OMG it's a rat!  And it's stealing my radishes!  (Rat and radishes made by Georgia Marfels).

Don't just stand there cat!  Get it, get the rat!  Chase it away, do something!

 ※

I had a great time in London.  I spent a lot of time at the beautiful V&A museum, met up with my Norwegian friends (see this post) and of course visited the Kensington Dollshouse Festival.  I love to see what the exhibitors have made, and chat with them.  But that means that even spending the full two days there doesn't give me enough time to see everything.  I know I know, I talk too much!

Unfortunately that also means I did not take any photos.  None!  I am so sorry!  I really intended to write a full show report...  Of course I will show you some of the things I bought in my next posts.  Until then...!

PS:  I have just decided to name the cat 'Kensington',  for he surely is of noble birth.  I will call him 'Tonnetje'  for short (meaning 'little barrel'  in Dutch, as he is a little bit overweight).

  1. Dear Josje,
What a nice garden. The cat fits perfect ! It's a really nice and realistic cat. This looks better then a cat of Fimo.
I can't wait to read about the London trip.

  4. Oh, Josje, your new cat is just beautiful and his Dutch name would work quite well here in SA too, so I like it very much!

Your garden is gorgeous, not so sure about the rat though and somehow I don' think Tonnetje feels like chasing it :-), I am glad you had a good time in England.

  5. It's a very beautifully made garden! The little details are amazing. I just keep looking at your cat, Kensington, it's so lifelike! Are you sure it isn't a real cat that's been put through some sort of shrinking ray? I love it! Kind regards, Brian.

    1. Thank you Brian! The little garden still needs a little work but it's getting there. I really wanted a cat to sit on that wall and I'm so glad I found this one, it's pose is perfect! I wish we had a shrinking machine, wouldn't that be cool?! Or maybe not when it was accidently used on ourselves ;-)))))

  6. I love everything you have done, it looks fabulous. A small kitchen garden with vegetables is such a great opportunity for color and interest. You new cat is so cute. The wall is the perfect spot for him.

The kitties around here love my brick walls. It is their favorite place to keep an eye on what goes on in the neighborhood.

I am glad to hear you had such a good time in London. I look forward to seeing all your new treasures.

    1. Oh London was wonderful! Such a beautiful city with fantastic museums! I hope I'll be able to go back next year (if my wallet will let me as it certainly is not a cheap place to visit!).

I am very happy with my cat, he is very cute! It didn't seem very likely to me that I was going to make one myself any time soon so I am glad I found this one. He doesn't have the little paws like your cats do, but I still love him. It feels like she used real fur on it, I'm not sure, but it is so soft. It is also very heavy so there must be something inside the body to give it the weight.

    1. It is a summer scene of course, with the vegetables being that big already, and the apples as well! The Narcissus should not be on the table as they are spring flowers, obviously, but they will have to do for now. Still a lot more to do in this garden (and in my real one too!!!). Thank you Rosethé!

    1. Thank you Carol! Yes I know I am so lucky to be able to go to a show like the one in Kensington. I must say I wasn't going at first as it is expensive and a lot of hassle traveling (even though it is a short distance), but I was reminded in a very sad way of how short life can be through the illness of a friend and decided to take the opportunity and go anyway.

  15. Hi Josje! You seem to have had a fabulous trip. Kensington or Tonnetje is adorable and seems to have become king of his domain. Watch out nasty looking rat! I love your little garden very much. It adds a new dimension to the yard. You have a cozy looking little patio. I would love to sit there and have a picnic with you. I have the feeling that you are a great cook! It's so interesting to peak through the windows and see the enchanting interior!

  17. Hi Josje, Beautiful cat and I also really like the rat with the radishes. It perfectly shows that the details make the scenes and their little stories. I do hope Tonnetje will save your vegetables and chase away the rat. I'm not so sure about my own cat taking on a rat!

    1. Well rats can be quite a challenge for a cat, but I remember my own childhood cat (also a red one) bringing home a rat for us once. And a huge seagull as well, that was so big he had trouble carrying it. So funny. Our Thomas was so sweet and cuddly inside the house, but once outside he metamorphasized into a vicious killer. He wouldn't let you pick him up outside either, inside he loved to be carried around.

I have started on the kitchen Idske! I will start on the windows today, I want to make sure I can fit your tiles underneath the window, above the 'aanrecht'.

  23. Josje,

Now I can add another talent to your already long list.....story telling, Lol!! I did so enjoy your little tale and Kensington's too (spelt differently of course...; ) ) he really is a little darling and is perrrrrrfect perched up on that wall, he really does look like he is ready to pounce on that naughty rat!

Your court yard is looking lovely, all those vegetables look good enough to eat, and well done on the seedlings, the look very delicate. It sounds like you had fun at the Kensington Fair and no doubt you have some wonderful treasures to delight us all with!

Thanks for putting a smile on my dial this morning!

    1. Hello Fi, Oh I too thought he was going to pounce on that rat, but so far he is still standing on top of that wall. Useless beast! Well at least he looks very cute. Perhaps he realises that and just wants to show himself to his best advantage. ;-))

Oh the seedlings...I almost threw the whole lot in the bin. I had to speak to myself in a stern voice to finish these simple little things. Just rediculous how I fight the fimo! Just not my material to work with ;-)

You must explain the expression 'putting a smile on my dial'! Of course I understand the general meaning, but where does it come from? It sounds nice :-)

    2. Hi Josje,

You know, you had me thinking for a minute. It's just something that we say and I have only realised now that you ask it's from a Children's show. My kids never watched it but it must have been on just before ABC kids as it was the closing song. Put a smile on your dial, we'll see you in a little while.....
Funny, sometimes you say things out of habit more than anything.

  38. Hello Josje! Your cat is a chubby darling, and I only wish that you would take a closer full faced photo so that we could admire him more. My sister in residence, had a cat that used to regularly bring home half dead or stunned into silence, rats! She would bring them into the house and drop them onto the kitchen floor, bat them around somewhat, then leave. The rat would then revive and then try to hide and( Woe is Me,) would seek shelter under the refrigerator! It once took a whole week to finally get it out and so seeing your ' Ratigan' in amongst your fabulous veggies was enough to give me the shivers! They are only cute in miniature, but your little garden and the patio and the garden furniture and the fruit tree are all FABULOUS!
