'Psyche' roombox

When posting yesterday's photo, I realised that not all of you have seen my Psyche roombox. I made it a few years ago after a painting by John William Waterhouse, 'Psyche Opening the Door into Cupid's Garden' (1904).

The story of Psyche and Cupid:
In Roman mythology Psyche is the beautiful daughter of a king. Her beauty is even compared to the beauty of Venus, the goddess of love. This infuriates Venus and she sends her son Cupid to make Psyche fall in love with the most hideous man in the world. Cupid is the winged god of love who shoots his arrows into the hearts of both mortals and gods to make them fall in love. When Cupid sees Psyche, he is completely overwhelmed by her beauty. In the confusion he gets shot by his own arrow and so falls in love with Psyche himself, greatly upsetting his mother by doing so. In an attempt to separate the two lovers and rid herself of Psyche, Venus sends Psyche away with some inhumanly difficult tasks to perform. The gods take pity on her and help her to perform all her tasks. Jupiter (de Roman chief god) sees the true love between Psyche and Cupid and decides to let Psyche drink from the nectar of the gods. This makes Psyche immortal so that Psyche and Cupid can be together forever.

  2. Josje your room box is beautiful. I went over to read how you made it, and I have to say for your first Sculpt Psyche is amazing. Maybe where her arm broke, you could put a gold bangle to cover the join.

  7. Debbie: she needs quite a makeover on her limbs...I have dropped her and she broke off many of her toes and a few fingers, I couln't find them all ... The bangle is a good idea though!
She wasn't my first doll sculpt, I had made some dolls a few years before that for my KLM roombox. Working with clay is not my favourite thing though, I will avoid it if I can. But once every few years I will have a go.

Sans, yes I am a teacher by training, I majored in textiles. I taught a class in Norway last month and will hopefully teach another one here in the fall. I really enjoy teaching, I'd love to do it more often but it is finding the time that is difficult.
I just read about Rosanna coming to visit with you. How wonderful! Have a lovely time!

  8. She is gorgeous, really beautiful! I'm so impressed you sculpted her yourself, you are a wonderful artist! I love the pre-raphaelite paintings as well, and you did a great job capturing the style and mood!

  9. That is absolutely amazing! I love all the details! And I can identify with the laurel leaves part! I've spent many hours glueing leaves I cut out one by one!
Thanks for your opinion on the light color. I totally agree with you. When I saw the image on my camera I thought it looked very cozy in a yellow glow. Thanks so much. I'll be back a lot to see how you made all your amazing projects!

  11. Wow Josje...your work never fails to amaze me. For someone who doesn't like to work in clay you do extremely well.

This is just stunning. I love the way you have draped her dress. it is so much like the real painting.
