Hear the wind through treetops blowing
drafting through the windowpanes.
Will the good Saint Nicholas be showing
through the storms and through the rains,
through the storms and through the rains?

Yes he rides through nights unfailing
on his horse so strong and fast.
If he knew how we await him
surely he would not ride past,
surely he would not ride past!

  3. It is so interesting to see other peoples traditions and different ways of celebrating the season.

I am not sure what your gorgeous Saint Nicholas molds are used for. I have seen something similar used for pressing into cookie dough. They are WONDERFUL!

I take it the basket is a gift to the reindeer. I suppose St. Nick will be leaving a gift in the shoes. :-)

    1. You're right Catherine, The molds are used to make a kind of huge gingerbread men, with spices specific for this type of cookie. I am baking a almond cake at the moment, using this same spices as extra flavoring. The mold were originally fridge magnets, but perfect for 12th scale.
The hay and carrots are for St. Nic's horse. He is a bishop after all, riding a white horse (on rooftops no less…). The shoes are left out so that he can leave a gift in them, although he usually also leaves a big hessian sack by the front door, full of gifts (we'll see tonight, I hope the old man can brave the storm….!)

    2. Listening to LBC London radio... That storm sounds awful.

Yesterday it was 73 F here. We are in for an arctic blast that will take the temperature down to 9 degrees F tomorrow night. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

      Delete
    3. Wow, that's quite a difference in temperature! I hope you have some warm sweaters!
The storm was bad, but not as bad as the one we had a few weeks ago, when hundreds of trees came down and there was a lot of damage to buildings etc. This time it was spring tide, which means all the water defence systems we have here had to be used and all the dikes have to be watched constantly so we don't get flooded (as you probably know, half of my country is below sea level). There was a little bit of flooding in some places close to the sea, but it wasn't too bad. Of course if it would have been my house which flooded I would not be saying that...

    1. Hi Fi, I dreamt about you last night. True! Must be because of FB. ;-)
Just to be clear, this is not a Christmas celebration! It has nothing to do with Christmas. Saint Nicholas and Christmas have merged into one the past century I believe. Not sure why. But we still celebrate St. Nicholas and Christmas as separate festivities.
The poem is one of the old St. Nicholas songs, which half of the country will be singing tonight ;-) Very apt, as the wind is absolutely howling around my house at the moment!

  18. Tanti auguri, Josje!

    1. Hi Blanche, yes I believe we have talked about our traditions before, a few years ago. It is so interesting to find that St. Nicholas has so many different celebrations all over the world, all stemming from the same background. Although Nicholas is a Saint, there are no religious aspects to our celebrations. I hope you have a wonderful St. Nicholas day!

Yes we're fine, thank you! The storm was pretty bad, a few pantiles came off the roof but that's not unusual. Most importantly, our feet are still dry (we're close to the coast and waaaaay below sea-level, haha!). We had great fun last night, and the song was very apt.

  26. Delightful, Josje! And your little song seemed to set itself to a tune as I read it. I woke up this morning to a very heavy snowfall although the weather report says it will end by noon. But since it doesn't create any problems for me, it IS exciting to see. Some areas of the country have really been hit hard though - especially Texas - I couldn't believe what I was seeing when they showed film clips from there! Have a very merry Christmas and I hope your shoes are filled with goodies. :)
