Solstice glow...

Around midwinter the days are very short and can be so gloomy…To bring a little cheer into these dark days there is no better colour than gold!

In the Yellow Salon of my Canal House  I hung a mirror by Jim Coates which I gilded with 23 carat gold leaf.  The little pier table was made by David Iriarte and the silver-gilt inkstand was made by Jens Torp.

The soft glow of these golden colours warms me up instantly!

  5. Hi Josje,
beautiful colours, the scene is so elegant, there is something about yellow that really lifts the spirits, like looking at rays of sunshine. We have had a very gloomy summer to start but today is going to be hot and tomorrow horrid, 40 degrees! I hate the heat, we will crank up the air conditioner, draw the blinds and make sure the garden is soaked.

    1. Oh no, that's far too hot! I hope it cools down soon again. For me anything past 25 degrees is too hot for comfort. We don't get many days like that here fortunately. Of course this time of year it is just gloomy and cold, although we did see the sun today. I don't mind the cold if it is clear and frosty, you know, skating weather. But now it is just rainy and around 5 degrees. Blah. So I'll just close the curtains and crank up the heat ;-) We'll both stay inside!

  10. What a great room. It would warm you up and brighten your spirits on a gloomy day. That is a gorgeous table. I love what you did to the Jim Cotes mirror.

I have one of his mirrors the finish looks sort of plastic. I had planned to change that at some point.

    1. I really liked the shape of the mirror and it was quite cheap, so I bought it thinking it would look great with some gold leaf on it. And it did ;-) It doesn't matter that it's resin underneath.

  11. Oh Josje, It is Exquisite!!! It is such a pleasure to come see your glowing treasures!!! Thank you for sharing some glowing gold at this Dark and Frosty time of year.... yes... we Crave it!!! That ink well.... it is unbelievable! BTW... why are there three cups in the stand? Did they have three kinds of ink??? Just curious...!
Thank you for sharing your Solstice Light!!!

    1. Thank you Betsy! Isn't it a great inkstand? It didn't photograph that well because of the reflections, in reality it is even more beautiful. There are dolphins and sea creatures on there with such fantastic detail! The original was made in 1744 by John Edwards. As for the three cups...the one on the left and right are actual cups, and I am quite sure these were used for ink and for pounce. The one in the middle actually isn't a pot, but a small cupped tray, held up by three dolphins. To be honest I don't know what it is for. These inkstands often had a quill holder in the middle, or a candle holder (to melt the wax), but in this case it is neither of those I think. If I don't forget I'll ask Jens Torp if he knows.

    1. Danke Svanhvit! There are hardly any stores left in Holland, so I always go to miniature shows to buy my miniatures. The German show in Soest is really good! You can buy wonderful miniatures there, including my golden inkstand! ;-)

  15. Hi Josje! The gold certainly does warm everything up! I don't think I've ever seen such an ornate inkstand, and I love the quill and pen! Kind regards, Brian.

    1. Hi Brian, The original inkstand was made in 1744 by John Edwards. It is a beautiful example of Rococo. Eventually I hope it will end up on a little desk, but for now it adds a little warmth to the Salon.
